Russian Army

By European standards Russia was a relatively-young country and had only come to any kind of prominence at the beginning of the 18th century. Russia had played an important role during the Seven Years War and, fortunately for Prussia, had switched sides with a change of monarch after the Russians had been fighting the Prussians for almost a decade.

After the Seven Years War there was a massive purge throughout the army. An enormous number of senior officers were fired due to widespread fraud in the armed forces. During the Napoleonic Wars the monarch was Tsar Alexander I. He had come to the throne after the murder of his father. Russia’s growing prominence could not keep the country out of the Napoleonic Wars for very long. In the early years the Russians were campaigning in Persia and against the Turks. But as France began to expand and their influence was felt more keenly, Russia allied itself with Britain and Austria against Napoleon. In 1805 Russia went as far as signing an offensive alliance against France.
